Every time we wander through Heraklion, we are reminded that some of the city's most pleasant surprises are found just a few steps away from its busiest areas. Places that do not need to announce their presence, yet attract you with their discreet charm. Easy to find if you are curious enough to look for them, but still hidden enough to make the city's noise fade into the background for a while.
Among the narrow streets of the historic centre lies one of these places. A restaurant where the dishes are made to be shared, conversations flow naturally, and every detail bears the mark of the people who turned an idea into reality. Its name is Bellot.
Just a Few Steps Away, Another Side of Heraklion
One afternoon, we were walking from Liontaria towards Kornarou Square, passing through the bazaar that connects these two points of the historic centre. This was once the city's central food market, and the street, now transformed into a pedestrian walkway, still preserves echoes of another time.
Overwhelmed by the heat and with that pleasant feeling of hunger that makes the city's aromas even more tempting, we followed the busy route, looking for a place to stop for lunch. Shortly afterwards, we left the bustle of the bazaar behind and entered a narrow alley. The atmosphere changed almost without us noticing.
Before us appeared a discreet terrace, hidden among old buildings: abundant greenery, potted flowers, tables arranged beneath wide-open umbrellas, and that pleasant sense of tranquillity you find in places where you feel welcome from the very first moment.
From the kitchen came the aromas of freshly prepared dishes, while the atmosphere carried that special energy found in restaurants where people enjoy the food, each other's company, and the relaxed rhythm of a summer day in Crete.
Sometimes, the first sign that you have found a good place is not what you see, but what you feel. A warm welcome and genuine smile were enough to tell us we were in the right place.
A Quiet Corner in the Heart of the City
Looking around, we had the impression that this was not a restaurant created only for those passing through Heraklion. It has the atmosphere of a place that belongs to the city itself, where people come to enjoy good food and spend a few hours together, whether for lunch or dinner.
The terrace, framed by old facades, brings together some of the details that give Cretan summers their familiar charm: traditional wooden chairs, colourful flowers brightening the stone walls, and nautical decorations, creating a relaxed atmosphere where nobody seems to be in a hurry to leave.
Inside, the space feels warm and welcoming. Wooden furniture, vintage accents, and decorative details give the room the vibe of a lived-in home rather than a commercial restaurant.
The Passion Behind the Kitchen
Beyond the food itself, we're always drawn to the people who give a place its character.
Over lunch, we learned that behind Bellot is a couple who spent almost three decades working in Greek kitchens before creating a place they could truly call their own. They did not choose to follow trends or reinvent tradition, but instead remained faithful to an idea they had always believed in: that great food and genuine hospitality cannot be separated.
It was easy to see that, in their vision, a good meal is not only about the food itself, but also about the way the people around the table feel.
Life Around the Tables
This is exactly one of the things we enjoy most whenever we eat in Crete: the experience is never limited to the taste of the food alone. Life unfolding around you becomes part of the meal, and at Bellot this happens naturally.
In the calm of the narrow alley, fragments of conversation blend with footsteps heading towards the nearby shops and the clinking of glasses from the surrounding tables.
And because we are in Crete, the scene would not have been complete without a few familiar faces. The terrace cats wandered around freely, like long-time residents, quickly winning the smiles of everyone seated at the tables. A tail disappeared among the leaves, a curious glance appeared beside a chair, and a lazy paw rested on the edge of a flower planter. They seemed to know that, without making any effort, they were part of the place's charm.
As the Table Comes to Life
Bellot is dedicated to the Greek tradition of meze, those small dishes designed to be shared. Here, there is no rush towards a single main course, nor the idea that everyone should remain focused only on their own plate. The meal unfolds gradually, through different flavours and the simple pleasure of discovering a little of everything.
The dishes began to arrive one by one, and the table slowly filled with colours and aromas. A carafe of the house white wine, light and refreshing, perfectly complemented the relaxed rhythm of the afternoon.
The Greek salad arrived first: ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, generous pieces of creamy feta, and the delicate aroma of oregano immediately revealed the direction of Bellot's kitchen, classic dishes where the quality of the ingredients makes all the difference.
Next came the grilled halloumi. Lightly caramelized on the outside while remaining pleasantly firm and springy inside, it proved once again that good ingredients require very little intervention. It is the kind of dish that can easily be overlooked on the menu, yet quickly becomes one of the favorites at the table.
Among the dishes we tried, one stood out for a different reason. Sheftalies, a traditional Cypriot speciality, are not something you expect to find everywhere in Crete, adding a subtle Cypriot touch among the Greek dishes. Juicy and full of flavour, they fitted perfectly alongside the rest of the meal.
Seafood also has a special place on the menu, and the fried calamari reminded us why they remain so appreciated in Greek cuisine. Cooked just right, they were light and tender, with a crispy coating that protected the delicate flavour of the squid.
Shortly afterwards came the seafood pasta. With its delicate sauce, the dish relied on balance: the seafood remained the star of the plate, while the pasta brought all the elements together into a harmonious combination.
We also found ourselves returning to the artichokes in lemon sauce. A dish that shows just how beautifully simplicity can be expressed when the ingredients are allowed to speak for themselves.
Beyond each individual dish, what impresses at Bellot is the way everything comes together into a coherent menu, free of unnecessary embellishments. It is the kind of food created for long summer meals and for those moments when conversation becomes just as important as the dishes on the table.
...And a Sweet Ending, the Cretan Way
In Crete, a meal rarely ends when the plates are cleared away. There is almost always one final gesture of hospitality, an invitation to stay a few minutes longer: a complimentary dessert, a plate of fruit, or one last glass raised before leaving.
Here as well, the final chapter came in the form of fragrant slices of portokalopita and two complimentary shots: one of traditional raki and the other of cherry liqueur prepared according to the owners' own recipe.
A small gesture, but much more than a simple "thank you for your visit," it reinforced the feeling we had from the very beginning, that hospitality here is not merely part of the service, but a sincere way of welcoming people to the table.
What Stays With You
Some places have a way of staying with you. What returns to your mind is rarely a single dish, a spectacular view, or one particular detail, but the atmosphere, the people you met there, and those simple moments that seemed to unfold naturally around you.
This is one of the things we have come to appreciate most about Crete. The island reveals itself gradually, through a meal enjoyed without hurry, a conversation with people who genuinely enjoy what they do, and the sense that some of the most beautiful memories are born in places just waiting to be discovered.
